Merry Christmas The Full Moon Here Comes Santa Claus Vol. 31—No.. 4 Albemarle Senior High School, Albemarle, N. C. Holds ^Chris' Dance “Holiday Prance,” ASHS’s first paid dance of the Yfar^was held in the school cafeteria, Saturday, December 5, froni 8 until ii.aw p.m. Christian Koepcke, Albemarle’s American Field Semc»' 5t^dent from Stuttgart, Germany, was the guest of honor for tns festivities. Chris’s birthday being Etecember 8, he was presented with a dec orative birthday cake by Santa Claus who dropped by tor the sur prise birthday celebration. Santa Claus found numerous presents under the Christmas tree for Chris. These gifts from the Student Organization included a pair of pants, a sweater, a shirt, a pair socks, a tie, and a tie tac. The cafeteria was decorated in a combination of German and American styles. Christmas trees, .bells, wreathes, and ^ Santa Claus adorned the cafeteria walls, while according to German tradition, colorful cookies were hung on the Christmas tree. Refreshments for the occasion were prepared by the home e^ nomics department under the direction of Miss Betty BrooKs, home economics teacher. An assortment of German cooKies ana punch was served. The refreshment table was beautifully decoratM with an angel ringing a huge tell which was suspended from ceilins The dance was planned and carried out by the of the Student Council. Mrs. John B. Mor- rwV Mrs. John W. Gaddy, and .'Tiliss Betty Brooks accompanied the studetits. Registration began at 9 a.m. Exhibits from various health career associations were on dis play from 9 to 10. Mr. E. H. ,/Heyd, chairman of the Executive Committee of Health Careers for North Carolina, welcomed the students and adults and, intro duced Mr, J,/Crenshaw Tlioirrtp- son. Chairman of District III, who presided over the CongresA. The invocation was given by Rev. Eugene P. Poe of the Westmin ster Presbyterian ifhurch. The Mercy HospitafrScljQOl of Nurs ing Glee Clu6, under the direc tion of Mr. Richard Keasler, pre sented two selections appropriate to the occasion. Alton L. Hood, M. D., surgical resident at Wake Memorial Hospital, Raleigh, pre sented the keynote address for the occasion. Other participants in the program were Mr. W. Wright Langley, director of the Health Careers for North "Caro lina, Miss LoRayne Dinguess, co ordinator of District III, and Miss Terry Lawing of Nqrth Mecklen burg High School, ^-^cretary of Health Career Clubs. The test was given from 8:30 a-m. until 12:15 p.m. followed oy the achievement tests given to about ten students. ,The purpose of the test is to 8ive the colleges an idea of the academic level of students in high school, but it is by no means ^ne only factor determining ac ceptance. The parade began at 4:30 p.m. and followed the usual parade route from North Second Street, ;through town, with its destination being at North First Street in front of the YMCA. Durham students spent the night in the homes of Albemarle stu dents, returning to Durham the next morning. Advance tickets were placed on sale by members of the three Al bemarle choral groups, and tick ets were also available at the door. Proceeds from the event are to be used for choral projects. :^V;;The ASHS Senior Choir and Spe cial jChoir traveled to Durham Wedn^day, December 16, where they Insisted the Durham Choir in pr^enting its Christmas Con cert iii-the Durham High School Auditorium. They returned to Al bemarle Thursday morning after staying in the homes of the Dur ham students Wednesday night. Music Masters sponsored a cl^artered bus trip to Charlotte’s annual Singing Christ mas Tree presentation at Ovens Auditorium Monday night, Decem ber 14. Students of Albemarle Junior High and Senior High were in vited to attend this magnificient concert entitled “Christmas Is Coming”, presented by the Char lotte Choral Society and sponsored by the Charlotte Observer from which proceeds benefit the Char lotte Charities. Nearly 100 sing ers of the Charlotte Choral So ciety delivered a variety of Yule- tide carols divided into four sec tions: (1) the birth of Christ, (2) a child's conception of Christ mas, (3) a monk’s conception of Christmas, and (4) a cantata. Students reported to the Albe marle Junior High School Monday afternoon at 5:30 to begin the trip by bus. Arriving in Char lotte. everyone had supper in the Barclay Cafeteria after which they proceeded to the presentation at Ovens Auditorium. The group ar rived back in Albemarle at 11 p.m. Christian Koepcke. Albemarle’s Foreign Exchange Student, ac companied the group as a special guest. Allison Harris, Elicia Harwood, Betsy Patterson, Linda Long, and Debbie Weemhoff achieved highest honor roll for the second six weeks. Those seniors making honor roll were Linda Lorch, Terry Lorch, Eddie Mauldin, Darrell Newton, John Burleson, Robert L. Lowder, Matilda Boone, Jo Ann Burris, Anne Gaddy, Mary Lowder, Betty Morton, Gwen Sasser, Richard Little, Steve Pinkston, Pearlie Rae Burris, Sheila Smith, Jack Deese, Peggy Dick.
